Crimes and Incidents Nearby: Mom Jailed For Stalking, Gas Attendant Stabbed

Man Robbed at Franklin Square Jewelery Store

Police are investigating a robbery that occurred on May 15 at 9:40 a.m. at Luckie Capri Jewelers in Franklin Square.

Detectives say two male subjects entered the store located at 969 Hempstead Turnpike, posing as customers.  After a short time, one of the subjects produced a stun gun and demanded property from the 65-year-old male victim.  The subjects then grabbed a nearby knapsack filled with assorted jewelry and fled the scene on foot westbound on Hempstead Turnpike and then southbound on Williams Street. One subject is described as a Hispanic male,  5’8”, heavy build, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.  The second suject is described as a Hispanic male, 6”, wearing dark pants and a black sweatshirt. One employee was inside the store at the time of the crime. There were no injuries.

Gas Station Attendant Stabbed During Robbery Attempt

A 64-year-old male employee of Vega Gas Station in Hempstead was stabbed early Tuesday morning during an attempted robbery.

According to detectives, the victim was pumping gas for a customer at the station located at 196 Henry Street around 3:10 am on May 15 when he was approached by a light-skinned black or Hispanic  male who asked for change.  The employee told the subject to wait and he would get the change inside the building. 

The subject then put his hand in the victim’s pocket in an attempt to take money.  A struggle ensued and the subject stabbed the victim with a knife in the left arm and fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.  The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for his non-life threatening injuries.

Pedestrian Killed on Southern State Parkway

A man in his mid-thirties was killed early Sunday after he was struck by at least two vehicles while walking along the Southern State Parkway in Malverne.

According to New York State troopers, "the man, who was born in 1976 and was from either Brooklyn or Queens, was walking in the westbound right or center lane of the Southern State Parkway near Exit 17 at about 2:20 a.m. when he was struck by a motorcyclist and a BMW," reports Newsday.

Car Crashes Into Great Neck Games

A driver who allegedly fell asleep at the wheel crashed through the glass window of the recently rennovated Great Neck Games, in Mineola on the morning of May 15.

According to the store's owner, the driver was a man about 58 years old who fell asleep at the wheel of the car and veered off Jericho Turnpike, smashing into the eastern section of the building. He also said that there had been blood visible around the wreck, signs that the driver had first tried to free himself by crawling through the windshield then attempting to open the car door.

Photos he took at the scene also showed that the car snapped off the nearby fire hydrant, flooding the pavement.

Inspectors from the Village of Mineola also came to assess the damage and to make sure that the showroom’s structural integrity was intact as did the store's insurance agent. The estimated cost of the damage was not known as of press time.

Mom Gets Jail Time for Stalking Little League Official

An East Meadow woman was sentenced to 60 days in jail and five years probation Tuesday for stalking and harassment after she wrote a series of threatening letters to an East Meadow Little League official last year due to her son not being chosen for a local travel team.

According to police, on May 21, 2011, Janet Chiauzzi, 45, allegedly sent letters "of a threatening nature" to an East Meadow Little League official and his son. Police said the letter also made threats against the victim's wife and daughter.

On June 1, 2011, the principal of the school where the victim's children attended received a letter claiming the victim was abusing his kids, which Nassau County Child Protective Services investigated and "deemed unfounded," police said.

According to police, six additional letters were sent to the East Meadow Little League attempting to "defame the victim and force his removal as an official."

According to Newsday, Chiauzzi had previously pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts and two felonies - second-degree stalking and first-degree filing of a false instrument. Three other charges, one a felony, were dismissed.
