Crimes Nearby: Pedestrian Killed, Rash of Car Thefts

A rundown of arrests and incidents that occurred this week in neighboring communities.

The following information was supplied by the Nassau County Police Department. A criminal charge is only an accusation, and does not indicate convictions.

Pedestrian Killed Crossing Jerusalem Avenue

A Hempstead man was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a car while crossing Jerusalem Avenue. According to detectives, a 1998 Dodge Durango, traveling East on Jerusalem Avenue, struck Salvador Duran, 50, of Hempstead, on May 8 at 11:50 p.m. while he was attempting to cross south to north on Jerusalem Avenue near Florence Avenue.  The victim was transported to Nassau University Medical Center where he was pronounced at 12:40 am by hospital staff.

There is no criminality involved in this accident.

Teen Attacked, Robbed for Headphones

A 16-year-old male victim was struck in the head and robbed of the headphones he was wearing while walking in South Floral Park Wednesday night.

Nassau County Police are investigating the robbery, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. on May 9 near the intersection of Marguerite Avenue and Emma Street. According to detectives, the teen was confronted by three unknown male black subjects in their twenties. One subject demanded the Dr. Dre Beats headphones the victim was wearing and yanked them away after another subject struck the victim in the side of the head with his fist. There were no injuries reported.   

Detectives are requesting anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All calls are confidential and all callers will remain anonymous.

Nassau County Police's Fifth Precinct received several reports this week of car break-ins and thefts from vehicles parked in the area. A total of 22 incidents were reported between April 29 and May 7 in West Hempstead, Franklin Square, Elmont and Valley Stream. The thieves stole tires and rims off six cars, smashed several windows and caused other damage, and stole an assortment of property from inside others, including cell phones, iPods, a pocketbook, and even loose change.

Two Students Killed in Plane Crash

A Garden City Park teen was one of two students from the Farmingdale State College aviation program killed in a plane crash Wednesday night in Pennsylvania.

The dead were identified Thursday as Casey Falconer, 19, of Garden City Park*, and Patrick Sheridan, 34, of Long Beach. A third student, Evan Kisseloff, 21, of Oceanside, survived.

Pennsylvania State Police say the crash occurred near Spring Hill Airport in Wayne County at about 10:35 p.m. Wednesday.

Steve Price, coordinator of the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency, told The Citizen's Voice, that the plane, a Mooney M20J single-engine model, appeared to have run into trees during take off.

Pedestrian Struck on Post Avenue

A 45-year old male pedestrian was struck by a car going about 15 mph at Post Avenue and Drexel Avenue in Westbury at about 9:27 p.m. on May 10. Emergency medical services were called to the scene. The aided was reported to be conscious but incoherent. He was transported to Nassau University Medical Center with severe back and arm pain.

Cars Collide on Herricks Road

A pair of cars collided into each other on Herricks Road and Broadway on the border of Garden City Park and Mineola Sunday afternoon at about 12:03 p.m.

According to an eyewitness in the parking lot of the Park City Diner, the impact was sustained as one car was attempting to make a turn from Broadway onto Herricks Road when the second car, a minivan travelling south on Herricks came and collided with the first.

Ironically, the accident also occurred in front of A1 Grand Auto Body, a collision repair business.

Two adults and two children with neck and back injuries were transported to Winthrop-University Hospital.

Nassau County Police cleared the scene at about 12:34 p.m.
