Flash Fire Damages Poplar Street Home

Pilot light from gas fireplace ignites flammable wood floor finish.

On Saturday, the Garden City Fire Department responded to a reported house fire on Poplar Street. Firefighters arrived in two-and-a-half minutes of the dispatched call to find a flash fire at the home.

According to the fire department, the cause of the fire was due to a contractor applying a flammable finish to wood flooring, which ignited due to a pilot light from a gas fireplace.

Firefighters report no injuries in the incident. The fire, however, caused smoke damage throughout the home and fire damage within the living and dining rooms.

Firefighters remind residents that when using flammable finishes, remove all
sources of ignition, including but not limited to pilot lights from stoves, hot water heaters, gas boilers, dryers and fireplaces, and shut down the oil burner.
