AAA New York recently honored former Garden City police commissioner Ernest Cipullo with its Outstanding Individual Achievement Award in Traffic Safety.

John Corlett, AAA New York director of traffic safety and government affairs, presented Cipullo with the honor during AAA's annual traffic safety luncheon at The Carltun Oct. 3.

winners are honored with a plaque.

During Cipullo's tenure as commissioner, the Garden City Police Department won numerous awards for their efforts to achieve a 98 percent seat belt usage rate, implement a truck safety program, lower pedestrian injuries and create a very successful anti-DWI program.

Cipullo started his career with Garden City as a patrolman in 1961. He later became commissioner in 1981. Retired earlier this year, he is an adjunct professor of criminal justice at Nassau Community College and CW Post-Long Island University.
