Garden City Firefighters Respond to Tractor Trailer Accident

The driver, according to Garden City firefighters, became trapped inside the trailer after he struck a utility pole while turning into a driveway on Herricks Road.

Garden City firefighters from Headquarters Co. were among crews who responded to an alarm on the north side of the Herricks Road Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) bridge early this morning for a reported tractor trailer that struck a utility pole while turning into a driveway.

The accident caused the primary wires to drop to the roadway and trap the driver inside.

LIPA responded, disconnecting the power and allowing the driver to exit without injury. According to the department's report, firefighters extinguished the burning roadway once the power was off.

The accident caused a minor power outage in Mineola.

Herricks Road was closed for approximately three hours. First Street to Rockaway Avenue was cordoned off by police from both Nassau County and Garden City.

Mineola Patch editor Geoffrey Walter contributed to this story.
