Mineola Woman Busted for Allegedly Stealing Jewelry From Garden City Homes

Maria Macedo was employed as a cleaning lady in Garden City.

A Mineola woman employed as a cleaning lady was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing approximately $7,500 worth of jewelry from Garden City residents' homes and sold some of the proceeds to local pawn shops, according to Nassau County police.

Garden City detectives arrested Maria Macedo, 54, of Mineola, based on an ongoing investigation between the Garden City Police Department, the Nassau County Police Third Squad and Nassau County Police Special Investigation Squad.

Police state Macedo was employed by a female victim, 39, between Jan. 1, 2011 and Sept. 12, 2011. The victim’s mother, 83, also used Macedo to clean her residence, which is also located in Garden City.

Police state that during this time period the defendant removed the jewelry from the home.

Macedo was charged with third-degree grand larceny and was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead today.
