An arrest has been made in the poor box larceny that occurred at the Church of Saint Anne in November 2011, Garden City police said Tuesday.
An ongoing investigation, which included the release of surveillance video taken inside the church to the media, the circulation of flyers and presentations at intelligence meetings covering Nassau, Suffolk and New York City, led to the arrest of Jason Swider, 28, of Levittown, according to police commissioner Ernest Cipullo.
The larceny was committed by two male subjects during the morning hours of Nov. 11, 2011. The perps took off with approximately $150 cash.
The subjects are first seen at the 1:00 minute mark of the surveillance video Patch obtained from Garden City police. They then re-appear at the 3:00 minute mark leaving the church, only to return approximately 30 seconds later to rummage through the donation boxes.
"During the course of the investigation an anonymous tip was received identifying one of the subjects in a flyer as Jason Swider," Det/Sgt James Bartkowski told Patch Tuesday. "Efforts to find the subject were negative until yesterday evening when Detective Kevin Madden located and arrested him at the Jamaica railroad station. During the arrest he was also found to be in possession of heroin."
The subject was held pending arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead.
A second subject is still at large and the investigation is continuing, police said.
