Police Blotter: Pair Arrested For Lewd Act, Drunk Driver Found Sleeping

See what crimes and other incidents were reported this week in Garden City.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

June 6: A Commercial Vehicle Inspection was conducted on Clinton Road, where 14 vehicles inspected, seven of which were placed out of service. There were 77 tickets issued for various traffic and safety violations.

June 7: Police Officer Walsh stopped a box truck on Washington Avenue for defective light violations and an obstructed license plate. The driver of the truck, a 48-year-old man from New Jersey, was subsequently arrested for aggravated unlicensed operation for having seven open New York State license suspensions. He was also charged with several equipment violations, obstructed license plate and uninsured operation.

June 7: Graffiti in the form of miscellaneous letters and numbers was found on the storefront of a Commercial Avenue business.

June 8: Officers responded to the New Hyde Park Road LIRR main line crossing, where an unknown white truck damaged a railroad gate. The crossing was monitored by the police until the gate was repaired by the MTA.

June 8: An 18-year-old Kensington Road resident was issued an appearance ticket after officers responded to his residence for a report of a loud party with disorderly youths.

June 8: The department is investigating a possible mail theft. A resident reported not receiving a handicap parking permit that had been mailed to the resident from Nassau County.

June 9: A 27-year-old Centereach man was issued an appearance ticket for soliciting in the village without a permit.

June 9: A pocketbook was reported lost or stolen in the vicinity of Hilton Avenue and Seventh Street.

June 9: At approximately 3  a.m., Officer Oswald was on patrol when he observed a vehicle stopped on Chestnut Street. He approached the vehicle after it did not move when the traffic light turned green and found the driver asleep at the wheel with the engine running, the vehicle in drive and the doors locked. Assisting officers responded and a police vehicle was parked in front and back of the auto. The driver suddenly awoke and his vehicle then lurched forward striking the police vehicle, causing minor damage. Upon further investigation, the driver, a 45-year-old Garden City man, was arrested for Aggravated DWI (.21% BAC), and impeding traffic.

June 10: A pocketbook was stolen from a park bench at Tullamore Park. It was later found in a nearby restroom intact with the exception of an iPhone valued at $400.

June 11:  Garden City detectives arrested a 41-year-old Lynbrook man and a 31-year-old woman from West Hempstead for public lewdness and endangerment of a child. On June 7, in the late afternoon, a school employee observed the subjects in a parked vehicle in the Stewart School parking field allegedly committing a lewd act while there was a small child in the rear seat of the vehicle. The female subject was also charged with an outstanding traffic warrant from Long Beach.

June 12: At approximately 2:30 a.m., Officer Byrd was on patrol on Old Country Road when he observed roughly 50 people involved in a large fight in front of the nightclub “Kemistry” on the Mineola side of the street. He immediately called for assistance. Several police units from Nassau County and Garden City responded to the scene. The fight was dispersed and two subjects, a 22-year-old man and 18-year-old man, both from Garden City, were arrested for disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana.

June 12:  A person accidentally left a wallet containing $187 in currency in a Franklin Avenue business bathroom. It was found missing when the owner of the wallet returned to the bathroom.
