The driver of a tractor trailer disregarded an LIRR bridge clearance sign on Nassau Blvd. early Friday afternoon, slamming into the Merillon Avenue overpass and backing up traffic on Nassau Boulevard.

Northbound traffic was being diverted via Somerset Avenue for approximately an hour.

The trailer, which came from Hackensack, NJ, looked like an "accordion," according to one witness. Another witness at the scene said the truck's "top was peeled off and the sides buckled."

Garden City police issued the driver, a 44-year-old man from Bethlehem, PA, a ticket for disregarding the bridge clearance sign.

Commissioner Kenneth Jackson told Patch that "fascia damage" to the front of the structure was evident and that an MTA engineer was on scene to determine any further damage, if any.

The truck was later towed from the scene.
