Fourth of July: It is a pleasure to note that the Fourth of July holiday was uneventful for our village. Our police department reports that the village was relatively quiet with only a few minor incidents.
Vilage Hall Blood Drive: The Long Island Blood Services in conjunction with the employees at Village Hall will be holding a blood drive on Wednesday, July 18, from 1 to 7 p.m. in the second floor meeting room of the Fire Department Headquarters Building on Stewart Avenue. The need for blood has again reached a critical level so please consider donating. For every pint of blood donated three patients are helped. Exponentially the village as a whole can and will help more people than imagined.
Did you know that over 800 units of blood are needed each and every day of the year to meet the needs of patients in Long Islands 43+ hospitals.
For more information, or to schedule an appointment to donate blood, please contact the Human Resources Department at Village Hall (465-4170).
Sanitation/Recycling Collection Schedule and Guidelines for 2012/13: Several weeks ago the village mailed the 2012/2013 Sanitation/Recycling Collection Schedule and Guidelines to residents. If for some reason you did not receive a copy you may pick one up at the first floor Business Office at Village Hall or request a copy by calling the Department of Public Works at 465-4003.
Shop and Dine in Garden City and Support the Local Merchants: I can think of no better way to enjoy summer than by dining outdoors with your family and friends and enjoying our wide selection of epicurean delights at our Seventh Street, New Hyde Park Road and Franklin Avenue restaurant establishments. The residents of Garden City are very fortunate to have these viable retail businesses where there is a good variety of quality merchandise and family dining experiences available to be enjoyed. Please support these businesses and enjoy the products, variety and outstanding customer service. Keep in mind that these merchants save you from traveling outside the Village for your needs. Consider the harsh reality if we did not have these businesses here to service our needs.
Lawn Watering Restrictions: Residents are reminded of the village’s lawn watering regulations. Residents are permitted to water between the hours of 5 and 10 a.m. and 6 and 10 p.m. In addition, residents with odd-numbered addresses may only water on odd-numbered days; residents with even-numbered addresses, or premises without a numbered address, may only water on even-numbered days.
The continued heat and lack of rain has resulted in an extraordinary demand for water service. In order to avoid more serious problems that would hinder our ability to provide water for fire protection and other essential services, we are calling on our residents to voluntarily reduce outdoor water usage such as lawn watering and car washing or similar non-essential water usage until we get rain.
Concert at Gazebo: Once again, compliments are due to the Recreation Department for arranging the 2012 season's outstanding Concert Series at the Village Gazebo, located on the Village Green at the corner of Stewart and Hilton Avenues.
Next week’s program is scheduled for Thursday, July 19, and will feature Emil Stuccio singing their hit - “Till Then” and other hits from the 60s.
The program will begin at 7:15 p.m. and admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul’s School. Please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075 if you have any questions pertaining to the concert.
Board of Trustees' Summer Meeting Schedule: During July and August the board of trustees will meet once a month. The dates are Thursday, July 19, and Thursday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. These meetings are held in the board room at Village Hall. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.
