A Word From Garden City Mayor Don Brudie

Mayor encourages outdoor dining, mosquito safety and board meeting attendance.

9/11 Memorial Program: The Garden City Fire Department will be holding its 11th Anniversary of 9/11 by conducting a short service to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11. The program will be held Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. on the Village Green (corner of Stewart Avenue and Hilton Avenue).

Shop and Dine Outdoors: I can think of no better way to enjoy summer and even fall than by dining outdoors with your family and friends and enjoy our wide selection of epicurean delights at our Seventh Street, New Hyde Park Road and Franklin Avenue restaurant establishments. The residents of Garden City are very fortunate to have these viable retail businesses where there is a good variety of quality merchandise and family dining experiences available to be enjoyed. Please support these businesses and enjoy the products, variety and outstanding customer service. Keep in mind that these merchants save you from traveling outside the Village for your needs. Consider the harsh reality if we did not have these businesses here to service our needs.

West Nile Virus: With just a few weeks before the end of the summer, it is still important to keep up your guard against mosquitoes and the viruses they carry. The Nassau County Department of Health conducts mosquito and West Nile Virus surveillance activities at 42 trap sites throughout the county. Surveillance activities include identifying species, determining distribution and abundance, separating and sending selected mosquitoes for viral testing and thoroughly investigating all cases of suspect or confirmed encephalitis, including West Nile Virus, to determine the source of infection.

The following are some suggestions on how to safeguard yourself and your family against West Nile Virus:

  • Wear long sleeves, pants and socks.
  • Use insect repellent on exposed skin and follow label directions.
  • Make sure there are screens in your home’s windows and doors.
  • Make sure the screens are free of rips, tears and holes.
  • Eliminate standing water around your home and property where mosquitoes can breed.
  • Cover your skin as completely as possible when outside when mosquitoes are present and active.

For further information concerning West Nile Virus activity call the Nassau County Health Department Mosquito Surveillance at (516) 572-1211, Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Board of Trustees Meeting Schedule: The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. I encourage all residents to attend Board of Trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of Village issues from a first-hand perspective.
