WEEKEND ACTIVITIES ON THE ST. PAUL’S FIELDS - PLEASE DRIVE WITH CARE

Residents are reminded that the Annual Jay Gallagher Memorial Lacrosse Tournament will be held this Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17, at the Village’s St. Paul’s Fields.  Please be exceptionally cautious as you travel on Stewart and Rockaway Avenues as there will be numerous people from outside of the area unfamiliar with traffic and parking conditions, who will be attending the games.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GARDEN CITY HIGH SCHOOL LACROSSE TEAMS, GIRLS GOLF AND GIRLS TRACK

Throughout the years our young people’s many academic, cultural and athletic accomplishments bring well-deserved credit to themselves, the Garden City High School and to our community.  It is not uncommon for the Garden City High School teams to advance to a Long Island Championship and to move ahead to the New York State Championship games. Incredibly, this past Saturday, both the Garden City High School Girls and Boys Lacrosse Teams competed in the New York State Girls and Boys Class B Lacrosse championship, and both were victorious!  Also winning this season were the Girls Track Team and Girls Golf Team.

The Girls Lacrosse Team coached by Diane Chapman, and Assistant Coaches Gina Leake and Dane Solomon defeated Canandaigua by a score of 13-8 to bring home their seventh consecutive state Class B Title.  Garden City finished this season with a record of 12-5.

The Boys Lacrosse Team defeated Irondequoit by a score of 11-4.  This was the boys first state title since 2000 and the first under sixth-year Head Coach Steve Finnell.  Coach Finnell was supported by Assistant Coaches Dave Ettinger and Joe Jacovina.  Garden City finished this season with an undefeated record of 22-0.

The Girls Track team was the Federation Champions in the 4x400 meter relay.  The Federation is above the New York State and also includes the Private and New York City School High Schools.  The Girls Track Team was led by Head Coach Charlie Cuzzo along with Assistant Coaches Erica Fregosi and Tom Skrivanek.

The Girls Golf Team led by Head Coach Reid Sclafani and Assistant Coach Paul Cutter sent five out of nine girls from Nassau County to the State Tournament.  Earlier in the month, the Golf Team won the Nassau County Team Championships.

We are proud of the accomplishments of each of the players and their coaches and thank them for being such fine ambassadors from Garden City to their respective championship games.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2012

Next Saturday, June 23, marks the graduation of the Garden City High School Class of 2012.  On behalf of the Village Board of Trustees and the residents we extend our very best wishes and congratulations to the Class of 2012.  They are an outstanding group of young people who are a credit to our community and I know that they will be ambassadors of Garden City in their “homes away from home” during their college years.  We urge them to keep listening, learning, and to seek knowledge so that they can make a difference.  We also wish them success with their college studies and safe journeys to and from college.  Keep in mind that your parents are always concerned about your well-being.

ADELPHI UNIVERSITY

At the close of Adelphi University’s 2011/2012 academic year, I want to acknowledge and compliment President Robert A. Scott on the many contributions that he and his administration have made during this past year.  While Adelphi University has always been a hospitable neighbor, President Scott has made a special effort to not only attend Village functions to which he has been invited but he has also opened the Adelphi Campus to the entire Garden City Community.  This has ranged from hosting an outstanding cultural lecture series, welcoming youth athletic teams onto their playing fields, providing a tour of the campus to the Village Trustees as well as conducting a study on the needs of seniors in Garden City.

On behalf of the Board, I look forward to continuing our relationship with Dr. Scott and to partnering with him by sharing resources that will benefit all sectors of the Village.  We wish him continued success in opening the Fall 2012/Spring 2013 academic year.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETINGS

The next Board of Trustees Meeting will be held on Thursday, June 21, at 8 p.m.  This meeting is held in the Board Room at Village Hall.  I encourage all residents to attend Board of Trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of Village issues from a first-hand perspective.
