Election 2011: Murray Defeats Port for Town Supervisor

Republican incumbent will serve another two-year term.

Incumbent Republican Kate Murray easily defeated Democratic challenger Gary Port Tuesday for the Hempstead Town Supervisor seat.

Murray captured 66.84 percent of the total vote against the non-incumbent, Port.

"I want to thank all of the residents of Hempstead Town who exercised their right to vote in this election," Murray told Patch. "I am grateful for the support I have received, and I am eager to work with all of the members of Hempstead Town's family to deliver upon Team Murray's campaign motto of 'freezing taxes, helping people.'"

Murray was tapped to be the town's supervisor by Nassau County Republican Chairman Joseph N. Mondello in 2003 after Richard V. Guardino Jr. announced his resignation as supervisor.

Prior to her time as supervisor, Murray had served as Hempstead Town Clerk for one year.

On Feb. 3, 1998 Murray became the first woman elected to the New York State Assembly from the 19th District.

Before serving as an elected official, Murray worked as an Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Justice Section handling prisoner litigation. She had also served as advocate for Suffolk University Battered Women's Advocacy Project.

Mac, my dad was a huge history buff and teacher. Flamboyant in life, George Armstrong Custer has remained on of the most controversial military figures in US history. Immediately after high school he enrolled in West Point, where he utterly failed to distinguish himself in any positive way. Several days after graduating last in his class, he failed in his duty as officer of the guard to stop a fight between two cadets which resulted in the death of both . He was court-martialed and saved from punishment only by the huge need for officers with the outbreak of the Civil War. His units in the Virginia and Gettysburg campaigns suffered enormously high casualty rates, the highest in the war to date because of his terrible planning. In 1876, Custer was sent against the Lakota Indians and infuriated President Ulysses S. Grant that he relieved Custer of his command and replaced him, but was later convinced to reverse the decision and send him against the Cheyenne Indians . Once on the scene, Custer ordered an immediate attack on the Indian village, he split his forces into three parts to ensure that fewer Indians would escape. The attack was one the greatest fiascos of the United States Army, as thousands warriors forced Custer's unit at the Little Bighorn, surrounded them, and killed all 210 of them. It took the US military 4 years to recover. It will take longer and strain our patience with Ms Murray as our commander.

Note to Jbauer when you or two of your family members is a Town of Hempstead employee and your name appears on the TOH payroll which is public knowledge it is probably wise not to post your Kate Murray brown nosing comments with your last name listed as they seem less genuine. This whole thread is a joke Kate Murray spent 700k to buy this election Gary Port spent 20k. The results speak for themselves, Kate will first give raises to herself and every other elected official then she will step down just like Guardino did to pave way for the next Joe Mondello cronie. This will never stop its like fighting the MOB.

Terry its like amatuer hour with you a) she raised taxes in the TOH almost 50% since taking office, she only freezes taxes in election yrs by tapping into reserves and raises taxes in off years b) bond ratings mean nothing when we have 15% unemployment in the town bond ratings only allow Kate to borrown further and put the town into further debt. Countrywide had a triple a bond rating up to 2006 as well. c)Wow I am jumping up and down bc after 100 yrs Kate finally got a concession on the part of the union d)She did this with state and federal funds and since so many people are using hydrogen cars these days it is such a great program e)she opposed the closing for 5 yrs and fought against it until finally her own councilman had to convince her the motel had to be closed, then she took credit for it f)no offices no houses it will be all retail space to compete with the source which is already failing. So yippie Kate created more 8-9 dollars an hour jobs. g) wonderful job creating more 600k+ housing at avalon bay, I am sure the youth of LI will all be able to afford h)This is how Kate wins by landslide every election she gets the senior vote I) and now I finally figured out why you have been a diehard Kate fan leading up to this election you are connected to Camp Anchor in some fashion The mystery was finally solved. Great job Terry perhaps when Mike Deery leaves his 167k a yr town job you can step in as Town spokesperson or propaganda spitter.

This is truly great news! This way, we'll be sure to have Kate around when the tax 'freeze' must be paid for. Keep the pensions machine rolling! Money for nothing and chicks for freeze.
