Political insiders across Downstate New York seem to agree: Mitt Romney
was the victor in the first presidential debate on Wednesday night in
which the former Massachusetts governor spent much of the time on the
attack.
Of the 31 insiders who answered our survey, nearly two-thirds dubbed
Romney winner of the debate, though most Democrats who picked Romney
said he won by a slim margin. Republicans thought Romney trounced the
president by a wide margin.
"Romney was on his 'A game.' Obama seemed like a deer caught in
headlights ... he wasn't used to this kind of confrontation," wrote one
Republican respondent.
In Patch's Red and Blue Empire Survey, sent minutes after the debate
closed, 20 Democrats and 10 Republicans answered before midnight, out of
more than 200 polled.
When it comes to who the news media would pick as the winner,
respondents were near unanimous in thinking Romney will be crowned,
though it should be noted that pundits, opinion writers and others in
the media who would dub a winner make up only a fraction of the news
media.
"I wonder if Obama's non-aggressive strategy is effective overall, even
though he avoided looking like a bully," said one Democratic respondent,
though others from the same party called out the truthfulness of
Romney's answers.
"I wish Obama had simply called Romney a liar, but for some reason we can't do that."
The 90-minute debate, moderated by PBS newsman Jim Lehrer, touched on
a range of economic issues, from tax code and job creation, to health
care and energy investments. But at times the debate spiraled out of the
moderator's control, a problem respondents felt hurt the dialogue.
While one person called out Romney's "overheated, aggressive
interruptions of both Obama and Lehrer," another simply called it "the
worst presidential debate I've ever watched."
For swing voters in the state, respondents thought a number of debate
moments could stand out in the minds of those voters, including Romney's
assertiveness – one Democrat called him "glib" – and "Obama's repeated
appeals to the middle class."
Though one respondent wondered why the president didn't go after
Romney for his recent scandle over remarkes secretly taped at a Florida fundraiser.
Where was the talk of the 47 percent?" one respondent wrote.
Obama and Romney still have two more debates scheduled, including one
at Long Island's Hofstra University on Oct. 16 and another in Boca
Raton, Fla. on Oct. 22.
The Red Empire and Blue Empire SurveysOur surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population
but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local
Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials
in New York. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the
surveys, although not all responded to the questions.
Patch will be conducting Red Empire State and Blue Empire State surveys
throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of
conservatives and liberals on the ground in New York. If you are an
activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part
in a weekly surveys that last just a few minutes, please email Henry@patch.com.)
