John Watras, Garden City's 45th Mayor

West resident, no newcomer to village politics, says he's ready to "get things done."

After a challenging election season, the polls are closed and results tallied.

John Watras will officially swear in as Garden City's 45th mayor during the annual organizational meeting April 1. He received 262 votes during Tuesday's general village election.

Watras, unanimously selected for the seat by the nominating committee of his western property owners' association, was blindsided in January when fellow West trustee Laurence Quinn challenged his nomination.

Watras won the Feb. run-off, however, and says he is ready to "get things done."

"As mayor, I'm going to listen. I'm going to be supportive. I'm going to get things done, period," he told Patch Tuesday. "It's not going to be a 'gotcha administration.' We're going to work together. I'm looking forward to working with the existing trustees and the new trustees coming on. I believe that we're going to get a lot of issues taken care of and energize executive staff that much more to accomplish our goals."
