Daylight Savings Time/Smoke Detectors

Daylight Savings Time begins this Sunday, March 9.  Residents are reminded that clocks should be set one hour ahead.  Please also use this date as a reminder to change the battery in your smoke and carbon monoxide detector.  Doing so may save a life.

Garden City Recreation:

• Indoor Tennis Center
  The indoor tennis center is open daily and is a great place to get some fun and exercise during these long cold wintery days.  There are courts available at various times throughout the day and they are also available for tennis parties on Saturday nights.  To rent a court, or for more information, please call the Community  Tennis Center at (516) 483-2525.

• Garden City Pool
  Please remember that spring is approaching and not too far behind are those long, hot summer days.  So now is the time to start thinking about a membership to the Garden City Pool.  A pool membership is an outstanding value that lets you spend your day swimming, sunbathing or just cooling off at a beautiful, family friendly facility  where you can attend swim lessons, exercise classes, movie nights and enjoy weekly entertainment.  These are just some of the extras that will add fun and excitement for all who join the Garden City Pool.  New this year at the Pool are guest pass booklets.  Each booklet will contain five (5) guest passes which can be used for resident and non-resident guests.  Each membership will be allowed to purchase four (4) guest books at the cost of $60 per book.  However, if you purchase the books prior to opening day, the cost will be reduced to $50 per book.  Booklets are only available to members and will go on sale on Monday, May  19th.  Pool membership applications will arrive at your home by April 1st.

Spring Clean-Up

This has been a particularly hard winter in Garden City and the Incorporated Village has had to spread a great deal more sand onto paved surfaces than in most years.  Street sweeping will resume as soon as we can be sure that there will not be a need to spread additional sand.  In the interim, Department of Public Works personnel are transporting plowed snow from the piles within our municipal parking fields to remote areas to melt.

We do need your help and I ask all residents to assist in the task of cleaning up our community to keep Garden City beautiful.  This can be done by  picking up paper, cans, bottles and other debris which may have been deposited on the streets and other public areas near your homes.  A few minutes of cooperative effort by all of us can make our Village look 100% better.

Residents are also reminded that rubbish should not be placed on the curb before the evening prior to the collection day.  It is a detraction from the aesthetics of the Village and poor treatment of one’s neighbors to ignore the Village law which specifies that rubbish should not be deposited at curb side before the evening prior to collection.

Pet owners are asked to please be considerate of those who are working to keep our community beautiful and those who are using park areas by cleaning up after your dog and by disposing of the waste at curbside on Wednesdays.

Shop and Dine in Garden City and Enjoy the Experience

I encourage residents to make a conscious effort to choose Garden City as the place to shop and dine.  It would be extremely helpful to our business community if you could make one purchase daily in the Village stores.  Customer service, selection and quality are outstanding.  While shopping or dining let the merchant know that you appreciate them and all that they offer.  I look forward to seeing everyone in town.

Village Election: Tuesday, March 18

The annual Village Election will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 from 12 Noon until 9:00 p.m. at Village Hall, 351 Stewart Avenue.  Village residents will be voting for the following candidates:

• Nicholas P. Episcopia Trustee - 2 year term
• Brian C. Daughney Trustee - 2 year term
• Robert A. Bolebruch Trustee - 2 year term
• Theresa A. Trouvé Trustee - 2 year term

Since the incorporation of the Village in 1919, members of the Board of Trustees in Garden City have been elected by a non-partisan vote of residents in accordance with the policies of the Community Agreement.

Absentee Ballot Applications

Absentee Ballot applications to be used in conjunction with the General Village Election on March 17, 2014, are available at the Village Hall, 351 Stewart Avenue.  Applications must be received by the Village Clerk by March 11th if the ballot is to be mailed.  For personal application, the deadline is March 18th.

Board of Trustees Meeting Schedule

The next regularly scheduled Board of Trustees’ meeting will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at 8:00 p.m.  I encourage all residents to attend Board of Trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of Village issues from a first-hand perspective.
