Nassau Notebook: Second Nassau Jail Lawsuit, SAT/ACT Security Measures

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.

Local Group Suing County Due to Hazardous Jail Conditions

The New York Civil Liberties Union (NCLU) announced that it has filed suit against Nassau County due to the conditions that they say has led to the death of five inmates in the past two years, according to Newsday [paid link].

The suit comes shortly after the mother of an Iraq war veteran who committed suicide at the Nassau County Correctional Center on Feb. 28 filed suit against the jail and Nassau County for "the personal injuries and wrongful death of her son." Bartholomew Ryan hung himself with a noose made from a sheet just one day after being incarcerated at the East Meadow jail.

Eisenhower Park Dog Run Making Progress

After months of rumors surrounding whether or not the county would move forward with two proposed dog runs in Eisenhower Park, the plan has been given the go-ahead.

Legis. Norma Gonsalves, R-East Meadow, told Patch that she recently spoke to Bob Dwyer from Nassau County's Department of Parks and Recreation, and he said that they're looking to complete the project as soon as possible.

The gate to the dog run will be located at the corner of Salisbury Park Drive and Stewart Avenue, with the main part of the new facility running along Salisbury Park Drive.

One dog run would be for larger canines and the other for smaller. Gonsalves said that she'd like to see the dog runs completed by June.

Apparently the conditions at the Nassau County jail are way too harsh. Thats why theres so many suicides.
I say close the jail and house the inmates at The Alegria Hotel. They can use the business, and then have the guards form a chain gang of the prisoners to clean the beach and repair the boardwalk. Do you think thats too harsh punishment for the convicts? It would save the City some money and instill a little work ethic on those guys.
C.J.M. March 31, 2012 at 05:38 pm
I would have to agree with one thing you said for sure-chain gangs. I just came back from Florida, and the inmates cut the grass on the highways and clean up the garbage. We cannot afford the grass on the parkways but refuse to use a resource that is right in front of us. No one in Nassau has a real clue at what they are doing. Waste waste waste. Send 6 people to fill in one pothole, it goes on and on. And now we just hired a company from Jersey for the booting project and pay them $166 per car for the boot. USE OUR OWN PEOPLE!!! What is wrong with this county?? Seriously! And I can totally agree with the conditions at the jail. From past experience, the area where you stay for 72 hour lockdown when you first get there...it is inhumane at best. How come the board of health is not looking into it?

Hey its JAIL!!!
David March 31, 2012 at 09:16 pm
Thank you, Stephen! Do people really believe that the "harsh conditions" at the jail are causing the suicides? Jail isn't prison. And even if it was, so what? Criminals in this country can't be rehabilitated if our jails are too accommodating. I feel bad for this woman's loss, but I sincerely doubt jail had anything to do with it. More likely, it was PTSD related. Does anyone have figures showing if these five deaths are above a national average over the same two year period?

Death penalty

Jails also hold people before they're convicted. And even if they are convicted, we should treat them like human beings.

I hear people claiming what a run-down facility the Nassau Coliseum is and how dangerously overcrowded the County Jail has become.
So why not house some of the inmates over at the Coliseum? We could use that source of cheap labor to clean it up and patch it up too. And with the Islanders never needing it after the end of the regular reason and maybe for not much longer after this season, give the convicts hockey sticks and sharp bladed skates and let them bash each other. I'd pay good money to watch that.

Sounds good to me.

Lifeisgood April 2, 2012 at 12:16 pm
First of, the jail is not overcrowded and David is correct in saying the jail is too accommodating. T.V's, hot showers, haircuts, recreation, hot meals, visits and razors daily. Medical, Dental, and Eye care daily. Some times I wait weeks for an appointment. The real problem is drugs. Its behind most crime and almost all suicides. When the state closes pyschiatric hospitals, the patients have to go somewhere and usually that place is jail. Granted they have come a long way with medication, but when not monitored in a hospital and out on the street, they start to take it while drinking and using illegal drugs. Then when they get locked up, they cannot drink or get illegal drugs anymore. The jail cannot sit and watch every inmate and if they did the county would be in alot worse finacial shape then it is now.
Jack O'Niel April 2, 2012 at 02:33 pm
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Too harsh? Please.
Lloyd April 2, 2012 at 11:53 pm
Do they allow conjugal visits?
Micah Danney April 3, 2012 at 01:58 pm
Conjugal visits are not allowed in county jails, only in the state prison system, and that is true only at certain facilities.

Is it a coincidence that the number of tragedies fall under the auspices of former cook and incompetent Sheriff Sposato???? By the way, prior to Sposato's "appointment" to the position, he was a jailhouse cook who was taken out in handcuffs a few years back for being an accomplice to kitchen equipment vandalism.
He has absolutely no prerequisites for this position...and is in "bed", with the attorney for the Sheriff's Dept....Elizabeth Loconsolo.

Just hope you do not get arrested after that comment...
C.J.M. April 4, 2012 at 12:47 pm
You can spend 72 hours there, and not be able to do a number two because the toilet is covered in urine and feces, and your pillow smells like the last person who used it, and not shower for 3 days because they have no shower in the area. Go for it. I bet if your son was in there you would raise holy hell when he told you about the conditions in that section.

It's jail ... exactly... Not a place to put people who owe money for traffic tickets...
Could you imagine getting put in jail for not paying your credit card bill but you still continue to shop? That's like not paying your expired inspection ticket & then they suspend your license & arrest you if you drive. They have the power suspend your license & to arrest you over an unpaid bill...Think about that!!! That's abuse at it's finest. Geeez when somebody owes me money I think I'll suspend their drivers liscense till they pay me. Most deaths at the jail aren't suicide... Pay attention folks... Maybe the kid who hung himself was claustrophobic, did anybody care??? NO... Now his distraught family has to suffer... That's just WRONG! The Feds need to step in & investigate these things...
Santa Claus April 9, 2012 at 02:21 am
Exactly... What if the kid was innocent ??? Maybe David who wrote above should wake up!!! Dum Dum!!!
Santa Claus April 9, 2012 at 02:24 am
Hey lifeisgood, did you ever break the law or are you Jesus Christ???
Take your head out of your rectum & think of your skeletons in your closet. Maybe you need a week in jail for things you got away with...

just reading Jane Goodall with my son for school and came across this quote of an amazing womanRead More "every individual matters, every individual has a role to play, every individual makes a difference." that is what makes our nation, our village so great everyone has an opinion whether we agree with it or not. It just saddens me to think some may not voice their opinion in the future because of the rather harsh comments which I'm sure were just meant to get a point across rather than be hurtful. Garden City residents are not afraid to get involved, to stand up for what they believe in and I am proud to live here.
