Hempstead Town Honors Iraqi War Vet

Garden City resident Tom Deierlein receives Town of Hempstead Veterans Medal.

During a Jan. 3 induction ceremony at Hempstead Town Hall, supervisor Kate Murray and members of the town board honored an Iraqi war veteran from Garden City after swearing in for another term in office.

U.S. Army veteran Tom Deierlein was shot by a sniper while serving in Iraq. He led the Pledge of Allegiance with Tuskegee Airman Julius Freeman. Both gentlemen were presented with Town of Hempstead Veterans Medals in appreciation of their service.

"Even today, brave men and women are defending our nation, guaranteeing the freedom which makes everything else we value possible. From Lexington and Concord to the desert in Fallujah and every other battle in between, we owe a debt of gratitude to our soldiers and veterans that we will never be able to repay," Murray said. "I would like to personally thanks Julius Freeman and Tom Deierlein ... for the peace and freedom I enjoy each and every day."
