Additional Crossing Guard Wanted Near Stratford School

The Traffic Commission is currently reviewing the request.

Parents have requested a crossing guard be stationed at Kildare Road and Stratford Avenue to help children cross as they come and go from Stratford School.

"The Traffic Commission is currently reviewing the request," police commissioner Kenneth Jackson told Patch Friday. If the commission is in favor of the idea, the request must then go to the village board for final approval.

In 2010 concerned parents won the fight for a crossing guard on Stratford Avenue and Nassau Boulevard to assist second, third and fourth graders navigating the four-lane, high traffic thoroughfare.

Just days before the start of the 2009-2010 school year, the school district informed parents that their elementary school children were not receive busing because of their proximity to the school.

The group of parents, led by resident and mother Susan Sonner, said that the walking distance to the school was not the issue, but rather the high level of morning traffic. Students aged 8, 9, 10, even as young as 7, were walking or biking across Nassau Boulevard twice a day.

To alleviate the problem, the crossing guard at Garden City High School was moved to the Nassau Boulevard/Stratford Avenue intersection.

Another busy intersection for students is Stewart and Rockaway avenues near Garden City Middle School. There is currently a crossing guard at this location and she does cross children fully across both avenues.

Are there any other intersections where a crossing guard should be stationed? Let us know in the comments section below.
