Adelphi University officials are planning to break ground on a 94,000 square foot "anchor building" on their Garden City campus next fall to make room for the School of Nursing, the newly created Center for Health Innovation as well as core academic centers.

Only preliminary and informal meetings have been held with village officials to inform them of the university's plans, which are in the very "early concept stages."

An architect has been hired and the contract was expected to go before the Adelphi board of trustees this past weekend. Officials plan to break ground in fall 2013 and have the building "go online" fall 2015.

Mike Filippon, Garden City building superintendent, said the new building will sit just north of the university library. He further noted that the Garden City building department has had no experience with the hired architect, who hails from Philadelphia, PA.

"This state-of-the-art green building will feature energy efficient systems and will allow the university to take less efficient buildings offline for renovation—significantly enhancing the energy efficiency of the entire campus," according to the Adelphi Office of Public Affairs. "It will include forward-looking technologies, clinical simulation, research and informatics labs and over 15 21st-century learning spaces adding over 11,400 square-feet of classrooms and over 21,000 square-feet for our health-related programs to support and enhance the skills of our graduates in these areas.

"We also envision making these state-of-the-art learning spaces such as the simulation labs available to our regional healthcare partners for professional development thereby expanding the reach and impact of the facilities."
