Best Buddies Fill Stockings for Hospitalized Troops in Afghanistan

Best Buddies president Breanne Lapinski spearheaded the event.

Garden City High School’s Best Buddies club recently filled stockings for troops in hospitals in Afghanistan.

“Best Buddies President Breanne Lapinski spearheaded the event by calling for donations of candy, decks of cards, DVDs and the like,” explained club advisor Tammy Kear. “Breanne also worked with local Girl Scout Daisy troops to make ornaments and holiday cards for our soldiers. Mrs. Marilyn Going's special education class made packages of ‘Snowman Soup’ which consists of hot cocoa, chocolate kisses, mini marshmallows and a mini candy cane and a poem.”

Best Buddies members were excited for this event. "In the past, we worked together with the AHRC club to make these stockings," Kear added. "I am proud of Breanne for bringing back this event, and I hope we can make this an annual tradition to give back to our troops."

In an organized, systematic, assembly line-type formation, Best Buddies filled more than 100 stockings! Special thanks to principal Nanine McLaughlin and assistant principals Kevin Steingruebner and Dave Perrotta for helping to make this idea a reality.
