Garden City Public Schools’ 'Question of the Week'

I've never voted in a school election before. How do I go about voting?

In order to clarify the complex budget issues facing Garden City Public Schools as it formulates the 2013-2014 budget, the district continues its “Question of the Week” feature to provide information and address concerns expressed by residents.

A complete listing of questions and answers to date is posted on the district’s website:www.gardencity.k12.ny.us.

Below is this week’s question and answer:

I’ve never voted in a school election before. How do I go about voting?

It is every U.S. citizen’s right and privilege to participate in the election process.  Garden City residents who are registered voters in Nassau County and have voted in a local, state or federal election in the past four years can vote in the school election and budget vote on May 21 in the gymnasium at Garden City High School from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

To register to vote, a resident must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of the Garden City School District for at least 30 days prior to the May 21 budget vote and at least 18 years of age by May 21, 2013. The deadline for registration is May 16. A link to Nassau County’s voter registration is available under “Budget Information,” on the district website. In-person registration is ongoing in the District Clerk’s Office, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Administration Building, 56 Cathedral Avenue.

If you cannot be present to vote on May 21, you can use an absentee ballot. Applications for absentee ballots are available to qualified registered voters on the district website under “Budget Information,” or from the District Clerk in the Administration Building, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Completed absentee ballots must be received no later than 5 p.m. on May 21. Ballots can be mailed to residents certified as permanently disabled by the Nassau County Board of Elections. For more information, please call 478-1040.

Complete information about the proposed 2013-14 school budget has been presented in the 2013-2014 budget brochure, which is being mailed to every home in Garden City. A copy of this brochure is also available online under “Budget Information,” at www.gardencity.k12.ny.us. A single-page budget notice will also be mailed to residents’ homes six days prior to the budget vote. Please remember to vote on May 21!
