The NY State Qualifier meet was held at Westbury High School on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon and coach Charlie Cuzzo's girls put together several terrific individual races and one dominating relay.
The Garden City girls track team will be taking the bus trip to Syracuse to represent not only GC, but also Section VIII to compete against the best in New York State on June 8 and 9. The state meet has perennially been a showcase for the talents of the girls, as they have come away with state titles over the last four years.
This year's representatives will include freshman Emma Gallagher, sophomore Laura Jaeger and seniors Alexis Yeboah-Kodie and Taylor Hennig.
Gallagher will return to the state meet to compete for a title in the 800 meter race. At last year's meet, she came away with a fourth-place finish for All State honors as an eighth grader.
The freshman will also anchor the 4x400 relay team that will be looking to continue their streak of victories in the relays at the state meet.
Hennig will also be returning to the NY State meet after qualifying for the 400 meter sprint championship. She will look to improve her seventh-place finish of a year ago. A veteran of running at state meets, Hennig will be looking for her third straight 4x400 championship, running a leg of this years 4x400 relay team.
Although not a newcomer to the state meet, Yeboah-Kodie qualified for the first time in the triple jump. She will face stiff competition at the jumping pit, but will return to the track for a leg of the 4x400, where she has been a part of the Trojans' recent success.
The fourth member of the 4x400 relay team and a member of the returning state champs, Jaeger will look to add to her winning accomplishments.
