Garden City Middle School’s Eighth Grade Band and Late Night Jazz Ensemble earned high honors on May 4 when they competed in the Music in the Parks festival held in Jackson, NJ.
The two groups erformed for a panel of adjudicators, each playing a warm-up piece and two adjudicated compositions. The Eight Grade Band, under the direction of Mrs. Martha Boonshaft, received First Place honors with a Superior rating and the "Best Overall” concert band award. The Late Night Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Ms. Jennifer Iovino, also earned First Place with a Superior rating and the “Best Overall” jazz ensemble award.
Of the 19 ensembles that competed, only three received Superior ratings. Garden City Middle School brought home two of those three honors. In the words of Wilbur Wittemann, one of the judges and a 31-year veteran middle school band director, Garden City bands are “well above grade level and [showed] excellent musicianship … I hope your school and community appreciate the high level of education these students are achieving, Bravo!”
The festivities culminated with an awards ceremony held inside the park.
