During Foreign Language Week (March 4-10), eighth graders lined up on the red carpet for "The Academy Awards," an activity designed to reinforce Spanish vocabulary words.

Story by Donna Scarola

Students in Sra. Scarola’s eighth grade Spanish class recently culminated work on their “Cultural Diversions” unit that featured television, film, museum and theater vocabulary in Spanish.
Students applied the vocabulary by reenacting a night at “The Academy Awards.”

First, they created an invitation to the Oscars in Spanish. The invitation included pertinent information regarding the particulars of the gala event. The classroom was transformed to look and feel like “El Teatro Kodak en Hollywood.” Working collaboratively in pairs, the students prepared questions and answers in Spanish and later conducted interviews on the “red carpet: la alfombra roja.”

While a group of students listened to the interviews, others worked at reading and writing stations. They took turns practicing their speaking, listening reading and writing skills in Spanish as they rotated to each station.

The event ended with a photo op in front of the red carpet backdrop featuring the students’ work. Some students worked on Spanish commercials and performed them during station breaks. “¡Y el Oscar va a ……………….. los estudiantes!”
