Keeping Walkways Cleared of Snowfall for Student Safety

A friendly reminder from the Garden City school district.

The recent snowy Nor’easter was a reminder: be sure to have your snow shovels and snow blowers at the ready - winter is just around the corner!

Local law mandates that a property owner must clear his/her sidewalk within 24 hours after the end of the snowfall. A Garden City property owner whose property abuts a school bus stop must clear the area to ensure student safety while children are waiting for the school bus.

Who has responsibility for clearing chunks of sidewalk uprooted by the village trees?

Hi Douglas, because of the storm the village will be removing the stumps (on village trees) and replacing the sidewalks at its expense. Other then a major storm condition sidewalks would be the responsibility of the property owner.
