Lightning Postpones Boys Lax Championship Game

Garden City-Wantagh showdown moved to Wednesday afternoon.

The showdown between Garden City and Wantagh boys lacrosse for the Nassau County Class B Championship will have to wait one more day. The final game scheduled for Tuesday night was postponed to Wednesday afternoon due to lightning in the area.

Hofstra University's Shuart Stadium was packed with fans, the players had been announced, and Garden City and Wantagh were getting set-up for their first face-off of the championship game at 8:30 p.m. when lightning flickered in the distance.

At first, the game was simply delayed 30 minutes, security cleared the bleachers and the field, and the fans and players were ready to wait out the storm. However, each subsequent bolt of lightning reset the scoreboard back to 30 minutes and shortly before 9 p.m., the officials decided to call the game.

The teams will return to Hofstra Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. to battle for the coveted county title. The girls lax teams from both Garden City and Wantagh will also compete for the Nassau County Championship later that night (6 p.m.) at Adelphi University.
