Students at Community Church Nursery School (CCNS) were delighted to show their creations at the annual Student Art Show May 16.

The night included the art show, a raffle and refreshments for the students and their families.

During the course of the school year the children had opportunities to create and express themselves through art, with the process the most important, not the end result. However, it is always impressive how beautiful the pieces are. The four-year-old class learned about some of the great artists and how they created their art.

The students created their own masterpieces inspired by Jackson Pollock, Mary Cassatt, Pablo Picasso and other famous artists. Additionally, some students who participated in the CCNS enrichment program called "Great American Artists" also created artwork in the fashion of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Keith Haring and many others.

"The Art Show is a beautiful expression of the mind and spirit of three- and four-year-olds. It is so much fun to see the children showing their parents and brothers and sisters all their creations. One of the best parts of the night for me and the teachers is seeing the older siblings, 'our alumni' come back for a visit!" director Cathie McCullough said.

The parents volunteered to hang all the artwork earlier and contribute delicious homemade treats and drinks.

After the families viewed the artwork that night, the raffle took place. The raffles included class raffle baskets and prizes donated by family and friends. This year the prizes included a "Beach Blast" basket, Yankee tickets, a Dooney & Burke purse and two Plasma bikes.

There are limited spots in the 2013 summer program, "Community Adventures." All are welcome to register their children who are entering a three or four-year-old program, or kindergarten. Garden City Community Church Nursery School has been committed to quality early childhood education since 1953.

It is located in the Garden City Community Church at 245 Stewart Avenue, corner of Whitehall Boulevard. Call the school office at 746-1756, visit www.GCCCNurserySchool.com or e-mail GCCCNursery@yahoo.com for more information or to schedule a tour.
