PHOTOS: Garden City Sprints and Strolls for a Cure

The fight against cancer hit the streets of Garden City for GCTA's annual 5K and family fun run.

More than 500 runners, walkers and some stroller riders, hit the pavement Saturday morning for the annual G.C. for a Cure.

The 5K (3.1 mile) race and 1 mile family fun run attracted everyone from babies to baby boomers, amateurs to athletes, and even some four-legged participants. Some came to compete, others just to finish, but all were united by one common goal - to fight cancer.

This was the third year the Garden City Teachers Association has hosted the event. Both of the day's events both started and ended at Garden City High School, where a festival was held following the races. It included refreshments, a dunk tank, raffle prizes, vendor booths and a display of hand-crafted kites that depicted inspiring messages about the program's purpose: raising funds to help find a cure for cancer. All the proceeds from the event will go to Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center.
