Power Surge Overheats Engines at Adelphi

Students in Earle Hall were temporarily relocated to the Ruth S. Harley University Center until the fire department determined all conditions were safe.

A routine power shutdown in an Adelphi University residence hall led to a power surge that overheated engines and shut off power to other buildings on campus Saturday morning, according to university officials.

The routine shutdown was scheduled for 8 a.m. in Residence Hall A. The power surge caused several engines to overheat, which then activated the system to shut off power to several other buildings, as it should as a precautionary measure, Adelphi officials said.

Garden City firefighters were called to the scene, as were several mutual aid departments. An inspection found the smoke conditions in Earle Hall were caused by an overheated motor.

"According to the Garden City Fire Department, they are not classifying the smoke condition in any of the buildings as a fire," university officials told Patch.
