Boys Basketball Excels in January

The boys basketball team is working their way through the conference schedule and starting to pick up steam along the way. Coming up on the midway point of the season the Trojans have been able to capitalize with their speed and athleticism to produce winning results. Garden City has played with solid defense and good ball movement and the boys have been able to pressure their opponents into turnovers and poor shooting.

January has been a good month for Garden City as they have been able to put together two strong games against Westbury and New Hyde Park with winning margins of 22 and 20, respectively. The most impressive run came in the New Hyde Park game with a 15-0 third quarter for the Trojans.

The inside play of Ed Blatz, Dan Bonchonsky, Andrew Granville and Rob Wotczak has given Garden City an edge on the boards and points in the paint. Blatz picked up two double-doubles in the wins averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds.

On offense the combination of Kyle Skramko, Spencer Bais, Joe Leighton, and Mark DeSantis work the ball quickly around the perimeter, penetrate defenses off the dribble and hit shots beyond the three 3 point arc. In the two victories in January, Bais hit for 19 and 14 points with Skramko continuing his excellent three point shooting with two in each game.

The big margins of victory have enabled coach Steimer to also get some strong play off the bench from Michael Collins, Matt Kelly, Chris Larkin, Ryan Giacini, Dew Pascale, and Ethan Gibbons.

The Trojans have five more games in January and will look to continue their run.
