Garden City Field Hockey Wins County Championship

Garden City beats out North Shore Sunday afternoon 7-1 to claim county title.

Undefeated Garden City came into Sunday afternoon looking to capture a county championship. After advancing to the counties only four days prior, the girls worked extra hard in practice to make sure they were well prepared for North Shore.

They came in strong and wound up winning in a convincing fashion 7-1. The Trojans are now undefeated in Nassau County with 16 wins and one tie on the season. They will take on the winner of the Suffolk championship at C.W. Post for the Long Island championship.

Hero: Garden City controlled the whole game as they came on strong in the early minutes. They supplied heavy offensive pressure as they pounded away at North Shore with multiple shots and scoring opportunities. They generated many corner chances and scored on five such attempts, according to head coach Diane Chapman. Catherine McTiernan scored two goals on the day while Mikaela Rix and Alex Bruno combined for five assists.

Turning Point: Garden City was already leading 4-0 heading into the second half. They remained well in control in the second half as they continued to add more offensive pressure. Due to good passing and stick work Garden City was able to knock in three more goals to give themselves a 7-0 lead. North Shore finally got on the board late in the game, but any comeback chance was well out of reach as there were only a few minutes remaining.

Quote: Head coach Chapman said after the win, "I think out of the seven goals, five were off of corners. We had been practicing corners because we got a lot of them last time. We wanted to get back to passing as opposed to the big hit. I think we played well and the girls executed our game plan to perfection."

Bottom Line: The Garden City girls are now the champions of Nassau County. They played a strong game and showed why they had been undefeated coming into this game. They are a tightly knit bunch who feed off of one another's energy and good play. As long as they stick to team play, which remains to be the strength of any winning team, they will be a tough group to defend against.
