Garden City Field Hockey Wins Seventh Consecutive L.I. Title

The Lady Trojans defeat Sayville to extend a streak of seven Long Island Class B titles.

There is sparingly a high school team in any sport that displays the dominance that the Garden City field hockey team puts out in competition.

On Saturday at Adelphi, the Lady Trojans extended their 2011 record to 16-0-1 after a 2-1 win over Suffolk champ Sayville, which was also undefeated heading into the matchup, in the Long Island Class B championship.

The win was the seventh straight Long Island title for Garden City, as competing in the state tournament under head coach Diane Chapman has become a regular trend each fall season.

"This was definitely a goal to get up to the state tournament," said Chapman. “Every school there is very good, so we just need to go in and continue to do what we’ve done in the playoffs. There is nothing easy about it, so we just have to work hard.”

With the score even at the half at 1-1 after Charlotte Castronovo scored for Garden City and Taylor Mills scored for Sayville past Laura Fanning, the title remained up for grabs for the next 30 minutes.

Alexandra Bruno had made a name for herself with a Regional All-American caliber season as a junior, and now as a senior, she has been looked at as one of the team leaders this year. Bruno took a pass from Gabrielle Giannone and scored the eventual game winner with 3:09 remaining in regulation.

In three playoff wins, the senior has tallied four goals and two assists, including all three game-winners.

“She is our team's leading scorer and just had a great game [against Sayville], being able to pass and receive the ball, and she has incredible drive, which is all great on scoring,” Chapman said of Bruno.

Castronovo, along with Tara Mahon and Jenna Fuchs, all scored once. Giannone, along with Victoria Piscopo and Catherine McTiernan, all tallied an assist as Garden City outscored Clarke, Cold Spring Harbor and Sayville by a combined 7-1 score en route to the L.I. title.

Garden City will travel to Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Saturday for a state semifinal game against Maine-Endwell High School (Section IV) at 3:30 p.m. If the Lady Trojans advance to the finals, the game will be held on Sunday at 12 p.m.
