Garden City Resident Named All-League Athlete

Daniella Joyce earns the title for girls cross country.

Garden City resident Daniella Joyce, a senior at Kellenberg Memorial High School, has been named an All-League athlete for girls cross country.

The title is awarded to athletes based on a vote of all the coaches in the NSCHSGAA League. All of the girls cross country coaches in the league vote based on the athletes' performance during the season and Joyce's "outstanding performance" earned her the title this year.

Joyce, a captain on this fall's Lady Firebird cross country team, helped capture two decisive team wins at the Wilton and Nassau Coaches Invitationals, as well as a runner-up team finish in the CHSAA intersectional championships in November, which qualified the team for a berth in the NY State Federation championships.

A true student-athlete, Joyce has made Kellenberg's academic honor roll all four years. Her athletic breakthrough, however, came in last year's NSCHSGAA spring track championships when she placed in the 800 meter run and helped lead the team to that season's NSCHSGAA title. Just one week later, she helped her team win their second spring CHSAA Intersectional team title in a row, running a key leg on the winning 3200 meter relay.

Just this past weekend, Joyce ran a leg on Saturday's winning 4x400 relay at the CHSAA Intersectional Relay Carnival opener, according to Coach Martin Brown, who praises Daniella's "consistent work ethic, one that earned her her well-served captainship in cross country."

In addition to her successes on the track, Joyce is also an active member of the Communications Club at Kellenberg and serves as a Latin tutor, an usher and a volunteer in the school's S.M.A.R.T. program and the apostolic outreach program for neighborhood elementary students.
