Garden City U10 Baseball Wins District Title

Garden City will now play Rockaway in the sectional tournament.

The Garden City U10 baseball team defeated Franklin Square Tuesday night by a final score of 8-5 to claim the District 29 title.

The win marks the first U10 District 29 title in the history of Garden City's Little League.

The team needed to defeat their arch-rivals two times in the last week to advance to the sectional tournament where they will meet Rockaway Little League on July 10 at Fort Tilden in Rockaway, Queens.

Tuesday's championship tilt featured comebacks by both teams, but Garden City had the final say in the bottom of the 5th. After Frankiln Square went up 5-3 in the top of the 5th, GC came roaring back with five runs on multiple hits by numerous players.

The game was then closed out with three consecutive outs in top of the 6th to seal the victory.

Each player played a vital role during the team's undefeated run through the double elimination tourney that began on June 23 in Mineola. The team's first victory was a 12-1 triumph over Garden City South. The squad then beat Floral Park 11-0 after a barrage of runs late in the game. Garden City then moved into the district title game with a nail biting 3-2 victory over Franklin Square, thus creating the opportunity for the final matchup on the eve of the Fourth of July where they, once again, defeated Frankiln Square for the title.

The championship team's roster includes:

  • Jackson Bautch
  • Stephen Baymack
  • Brian Boland
  • Jake Fraher
  • Joe Griffin
  • Patrick Ilardi
  • Andrew Luglio
  • Joseph Macchiarola
  • Michael Rasquin
  • Shane Ross
  • T.J. Schmitt
  • Christian Smith
  • Paul Varano

Coaches Joe Macchiarola, Steve Baymack and Bob Boland are looking forward to leading their team in next week's sectional matchup!
