GCHS ALUM INDUCTED INTO IVY HALL OF FAME

Garden City Alum Jay McMahon Inducted into Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame
Dr. John “Jay” McMahon GCHS class of ’87 was inducted into the Brown University Athletic Hall of Fame for Lacrosse on November 3, 2012. 
A quote from the induction ceremonies program reads “In the storied annals of Brown men’s lacrosse, John G. McMahon, Jr. DPM, ACFAS, stands out as one of the best midfielders ever to play for the school. Leading the Bears to levels of success that have not been equaled, McMahon, a four-year starter, is the second all-time leading scorer among midfielders, tallying 132 points on 92 goals and 37 assists. He also ranks 10th all-time among all players in goals scored”.
“Having been around Brown Lacrosse program for over 40 years now, I can say with no uncertainty that Jay is on a VERY short list of the finest players to have ever graced Stevenson Field,” said his Brown head coach Dom Starsia, who is now at The University of Virginia. “He would be in the conversation of the top overall middies in the college game.” 
A high school All-American who captained the 1988 US Junior National team that won the World Junior Lacrosse Championship, McMahon also was named to the games all-tournament team and was second in voting for tournament MVP. 
A tri-captain in 1991 for Brown, McMahon earned 1st team All-American honors leading the Bears to their 1st and only undefeated regular season and an unprecedented #2 national ranking. He is one of 8 players in Brown Lacrosse history to be named a 1st team All-American and one of seven to be a three time All-American selection. 
In “storied annals” of 76 years of GCHS lacrosse McMahon stands out as only one of six players to be named a 1st team All-American on the college level.  
 At GCHS, as a junior, McMahon was among the leaders of the school’s first ever NY State lacrosse title and undefeated season @ 25-0. That year, 1986, he was one of four players from GCHS named as an All-Nassau County selection.  The following year McMahon was the Jim Brown Award recipient for “Midfielder of the Year”, the Student Athlete award winner (given to Nassau counties athlete with the highest level of academic achievement), as well as being named to the All-American squad.   
Dr. McMahon was accompanied at the black-tie event, held at the Westin in Downtown Providence, RI, by his wife Alison and their two children: Alina and Luke, his entire extended family from Garden City, and former teammates from GCHS and Brown University.  Dr. McMahon dedicated his acceptance speech to his mother, Maureen, for instilling in her son, at a very young age, the value of academic as well athletic achievement. 
Dr. McMahon is a member of the orthopedic department and Chief of Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery at St. Francis Medical Center, just outside of Richmond, VA. He resides in Midlothian, VA with his wife and children.
