Waldorf Hoopsters Compete in 2011 IPPSAL Championships

Kudos to the players and coaches of both the boys and girls basketball teams on a highly successful season.

Waldorf’s boys and girls varsity basketball teams – accompanied by a contingent of 100+ students, parents and staff – competed in the 2011 Independent Private and Parochial Schools Athletic League (IPPSAL) basketball championships Thursday at the Solomon Schechter Day School in Glen Cove.

The first game saw the Waldorf girls take on the undefeated squad from Portledge. Down by 16 at the half, Waldorf battled back and took the lead with only a minute to go in the game. Despite this remarkable team effort, the girls ultimately lost to Portledge by a score of 35-40. With only two graduating seniors – co-captains Olivia Paone and Annabella Sugure – Waldorf fans can expect to hear more from this talented team over the next few years!

And as if that wasn’t already enough excitement for the supporters of Waldorf – in a nail-biter that went into overtime, the boys varsity basketball team won over Solomon Schechter Day School by a score of 71-62. The tenacious team from Solomon Schechter pushed the Waldorf team to their maximum effort. With three seconds remaining in regulation, Waldorf senior Sean Proctor scored on a rebound tip in – tying the score and sending the game into overtime. From there, the squad from Waldorf took over, led by senior stand-out Landon Twine. Finishing his Waldorf career with more than 1,500 points, Twine is the leading scorer among all private schools this year and ranks fourth among all Long Island schools, both public and private.
