Flashing Arrow Signs Coming to Rockaway Avenue

Flashing warning signs on the north and south sides of Rockaway Avenue expected to help mitigate speeding, especially near Garden City High School.

Bases for the new flashing arrow signs approved for Rockaway Avenue are being installed for northbound traffic, according to Department of Public Works director Robert Mangan.

The signs will follow once the bases are complete.

The Traffic Commission in October agreed to install the flashing warning signs on both the north and south sides of Rockaway to help mitigate speeding, especially at the Merillon Avenue/Rockaway Avenue intersection near Garden City High School.

Though Rockaway Avenue is a county-owned road, police commissioner Kenneth Jackson said advisory signs such as ones with flashing yellow lights do not need approval like regulatory signs do.

Trustees also authorized Public Works director Robert Mangan to request Nassau County place rumble strips on Rockaway Avenue and request that the county study a possible reconfiguration of the intersection, which could include a traffic light, in an attempt to even further safeguard the area.
