Arthur Anderson to Receive Rotary's Community Service Award

Life-long resident says he's "honored and very much humbled" to receive to the award.

H. Arthur Anderson will receive the Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club's 23rd annual “Community Service Award” during an awards dinner June 13 at the Garden City Country Club, 6-10 p.m.

"I am honored and very much humbled to receive the Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club's Annual Community Service Award. I truly do not look at what I do each day as necessarily service but rather a way of life," Anderson said.

"When you make service an integral part of your day, it just happens. It becomes part of who you are. Doing something for someone who cannot do it for themselves or working to help foster a better business district to benefit the business owners and in turn the residents of a community, service to others is one of the most rewarding things in my life."

The award was established in 1991 to honor Maurice Kirby, who had served as an active Rotarian since 1980. Kirby was a village trustee and active as a volunteer in various other community organizations. Peter Gall, who served as Garden City mayor from 1987-89, was the award's first recipient.

According to the Rotary, this prestigious award, which recognizes the spirit of volunteerism, alternates each year between Mineola and Garden City.

The many organizations which Arthur Anderson so generously serves recognize him as a consummate volunteer, Rotary officials said.

A life-long resident of Garden City, Anderson has served the Kiwanis Club of Garden City as past president and continues to be active in the club today, promoting the idea that both Kiwanis and Rotary should support each other’s activities and efforts toward their various service projects.

Anderson is also past president of the Garden City Republican Club, and continues to be active in that club as well. He has served St. Joseph’s Church in many capacities, including running the annual St. Joseph’s blood drive.

Anderson is also a civic member of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce and has served as an active member of its Pineapple Ball Committee for years. Moreover, he has coordinated with the Kiwanis Key Club of Adelphi University to secure volunteers to assist the chamber with both its fall street fair and Easter vintage car parade.

"Without being asked, Arthur is known to step up as needs arise within the many organizations and activities in which he is involved," said Roger Eltringham, himself the award recipient in 2007 and fellow Kiwanian. “ Arthur’s boundless energy, enthusiasm and are great qualities which I admire. He leaves his imprint on any project or charity in which he has become involved.”

The Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club is proud to honor Arthur Anderson, whose life is "a life of service," with the Mineola-Garden City Community Service Award.

For reservations, at $70 per person, call the chamber at 746-7724, ext. 101.
