Two New Faces on Rec Commission

Mayor John Watras appoints Kristina Russo and Judy Courtney to the Board of Commissioners of Cultural & Recreational Affairs.

Garden City residents and avid community volunteers Judy Courtney and Kristina Russo have been unanimously appointed to serve on the village's Board of Commissioners of Cultural & Recreational Affairs, which meets tonight at the St. Paul's senior center at 7:30 p.m.

The board's unanimous decision to increase the number of members was two-fold: both women were "excellent" candidates and their participation will help prevent a shortage of members who are sometimes unable to attend meetings because of prior commitments.

"We had two candidates and these were excellent candidates," trustee Nick Episcopia said. "It was virtually impossible to tell them apart. Both of these people have had a history of service to the village."

Courtney is the immediate past president of the Eastern Property Owners' Association and is still very much involved in the association while Russo for years has served on the Citizens Budget Review and Advisory Committee (CBRAC).

At the Nov. 21 board meeting, Mayor John Watras officially appointed Russo and Courtney to serve on the commission through April 2016 and 2017, respectively.

"Thank you and congratulations," Mayor Watras said.

The women join Kevin Ocker (chairman), Michael Ryder, Patrick Manley, Timothy Stapleford and Kenneth Moody.
