Cooling Centers Available in Garden City

The senior center on Golf Club Lane and the Garden City Library will remain open until 9 p.m. Wednesday.

With temps expected to hit 95 degrees in Garden City Wednesday (which could actually feel like 100+ with the heat index) the senior center on Golf Club Lane and the Garden City Public Library are serving as much-needed cooling centers for those seeking relief.

The center will remain open until 9 p.m. Wednesday and will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. both Thursday and Friday. The library will also remain open until 9 p.m. Wednesday and will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, according to an alert on the village of Garden City's website.

According to the National Weather Service, which has issued a hazardous weather outlook for all of Long Island, the heat index could reach 105 degrees for several hours on Friday afternoon.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an air quality alert for Nassau and Suffolk counties that will remain in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday.
