'Noon Year's Eve' Celebration, Village Taxes Due This Week

What's on tap this week in Garden City.

"Noon Year's Eve" Celebration: The Long Island Children’s Museum is setting a course for 2014 with an outer space theme for its annual “noon” year’s eve celebration, “Countdown to 12!” The annual event allows visitors to take part in all the traditional elements of the holiday, including confetti and counting down to the new year. Activities start at noon on Dec. 31 and feature themed crafts, face painting and a DJ to keep the intergalactic party going all afternoon long. For more information, visit www.licm.org.

Village Taxes Due
: The second half of village taxes, which were due and payable on Dec. 1, are subject to penalty if payment is not made within a 30-day grace period. This year payments received after Tuesday, Dec. 31, will be subject to penalty. Please return the “second half” bill stub with your payment made payable to the Incorporated Village of Garden City. Please note that Village Hall will close at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 31, and remain closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observance of the New Year’s holiday. As stated above, tax payments may be placed in the letter slot at the easterly entrance to Village Hall.

Veterans Real Property Tax Exemption
: The deadline for applications for veterans tax exemptions is Tuesday, Dec. 31. Please note village offices close at noon on this day. Applications cannot be accepted after the close of business on that date.

St. Joe's School Display
: A display presented by St. Joseph’s School will be exhibited in the Garden City Public Library’s showcases beginning Jan. 3. For more information, click here.

Early Closings
: Garden City Village Hall closes at noon Tuesday, Dec. 31, New Year's Eve, and will re-open at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2.

Holiday Gym Program
: The Garden City Recreation Department's holiday gym program continues this week. The program is open to youngsters of the Inc. Village of Garden City only. The schedule for these programs will be as follows:
  • Kindergarten and 1st grade – 9 to 10:30 a.m.
  • 2nd and 3rd grades -  10:30 a.m. to Noon
  • 4th, 5th, and 6th grades – Noon to 2 p.m.
  • For grades 7 to 12 the Field House will be open for supervised open play from 2 to 6 p.m.
  • For college-aged residents, the Field House will be open for supervised open play from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Holiday Sanitation Schedule for New Year’s Week: Residents are reminded that there will be no regular garbage or recycling pickup on New Year’s Day. Also, there will be no rubbish pick up on Wednesday, Jan. 1. The holiday week collection will be as follows:

Western half of village (west of Rockaway Avenue)

Rubbish: Thursday

If you recycling day is on Wednesday, Jan. 1, your recycling pick up has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 8.
