Love, opera style at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center

Dramatic and tragic love stories are the theme of this spring’s opera in cinema series at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AUPAC). Featuring performances filmed at the outdoor locations  Arena di Verona in Italy and Sydney Harbor in Australia, each feature will be screened in the Concert Hall on a high definition 30-foot screen with surround sound. The AUPAC is located at 1 South Avenue in Garden City.

From the Arena di Verona is:

·         Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Turnadot is composer Puccini’s last work before his death. The story begins with the cold-hearted Princess Turnadot declaring “Any prince seeking to marry me must answer three riddles. But if he fails, he will have to die.” It is through this game of enigmatic questions she discovers her true love.

·         Sunday, March 23, 2014 3:00 p.m. Verdi’s Aida tells the story of the title character, an Ethiopian girl enslaved to Amneris  - both in love with the same person Egyptian warrior, Radames.

·         Sunday, April 11, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.  Roméo and Juliette, composed by Charles Gounod is based on William Shakespeare’s play. It is the tale of the original teenage star-crossed lovers whose devotion to each other ends tragically.

Closing out the film series is the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour’s Carmen on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at 7:00 pm. Initially received as immoral and vulgar, it is the story of the gypsy, Carmen, and the men who love her. The unfolding tale of a love triangle and murder is one that many modern day films and plays are based on, as well as featuring a musical score familiar world-wide.

Adelphi University’s Performing Arts Center is one of Long Island’s premier cultural arts venues for entertainment of all kinds. Its spring 2014 program features performances by Boston Brass, Trio Solisti and Tony-winner Tommy Tune.
