I think the Board of Trustees is doing a fantastic job during these hard times.

I strongly believe that all municipal collective bargaining units (in total all government unionsRead More – Federal, State and Local) should be decertified and declared illegal. They have outlived their original purpose. That said, I also believe most of the Village’s employees are diligent workers, capable and conscientious. Nevertheless, I would guestimate with reference to inefficient private sector companies that the work force (management, staff and operations) of the Village likely has 15 – 30 %+ “featherbedders”, “driftwood” and “deadwood”. These individuals could be taken off the payroll and there would be minimal to no noticeable effect in the remaining employees’ workload or productivity (i.e., service levels). Excess, unproductive headcount is a drag on any organization. The Village’s operations are no different. Most individuals want to work; no one wants to be taken advantage of but most will acknowledge they are happiest when productively employed. Reducing headcount will benefit the remaining Village employees today through encouraging a healthier work environment; while at the same time ensuring that the resident/taxpayers remain confident in the future of the community. The continual escalating tax burden this Village presents (and it will continue because of the funding requirements of outrageous retiree pension and benefit schemes) coupled with Town, County, State and Federal burdens are increasing the attractiveness of alternative regions and communities. I suggest that the productive workers in this Village increase their consideration of what’s best for them individually and stop their union and local leadership from protecting the “featherbedders”, “driftwood” and “deadwood”. After all it’s only the leadership that benefits from the largest collective bargaining unit.

Come on everyone knows if you don't tip the garbage men a few times a year they will skip your houseRead More now and then. Its not like we have a bunch of top performers out there. There is def fat to be cut.

Sounds like the CSEA is surprised that Village residents are finally paying attention to not onlyRead More the bloated staffing levels in most departments, but the abuse of overtime to do things like weekend leaf clearing and hydrant flushing, and the lack of focus by department heads on increasing efficiency and saving money. BOT: DO NOT BACK DOWN. Force the unions to make concessions and department heads to maintain services WITH fewer people -- just like the private sector -- and DO NOT back down on the layoffs. Hold department heads accountable. Too many have been in place for decades. Time to make changes and bring in people with new ideas.

LuvGC do you sometimes make outlandish claims like you are the inventor of the question mark. Do youRead More find acorns to be lazy? I love people who make statements with nothing to back them up.

Whilst we do realise that some truck traffic is necessary, our village should consider that theRead More trucks that will be allowed should be those that are necessary to supply the local stores or those that belong to tradesmen doing repair and/or maintenance necessary work on our homes. Many trucks are too large, traveling too fast and obstructing what should be normal village traffic.

could they just build this light rail already it will eliminate the need for cars in so manyRead More communities to have a way to transfer by train to other train lines and other communtiies. There should be a light rail built on merrick road, sunrise highway, hempstead turnpike, jericho turnpike, and in suffolk route 110. Overnight the amount of cars being used on long island would disappear.

Save if. Sell the land and make a nice, big senior center at St Paul's. Combine the two centers.Read More Move the rec dept into St Paul's. love the library. The money made in sales and increased taxes on those properties should cover most if the move. This would serve as a great anchor for St Paul's.

If all the seniors put their homes on the market this summer, the housing prices in GC would dropRead More like a stone. As it is, there is going to be a glut of those homes on the market in the next 5-10 years. All you see driving around town is tan Centurys!
LuvGC May 10, 2013 at 02:43 pm
Don't tell me a third of the Village is seniors, that is not relevant. How many seniors actuallyRead More use the center? What other Village space is available to them that is not being used (the library, St. Pauls, schools in the summer). Seems to me too many of these Recreation Dept. projects move along without a lot of thought. Over $700,000 for a roller hockey rink that according to the paper, 350 people use!!! Do that math!!!! It seems to me that our BOT cave to small special interest groups that have pet projects they want to get done.
