Trustees speak out after the CSEA "decided to undertake a public airing of the contract negotiations" at the May 16 board meeting.

I agree. Keep up the good work BOT and stay strong. You represent the residents of GC not theRead More workers.

Of course you do what else is new!

I think the Board of Trustees is doing a fantastic job during these hard times.

I strongly believe that all municipal collective bargaining units (in total all government unionsRead More – Federal, State and Local) should be decertified and declared illegal. They have outlived their original purpose. That said, I also believe most of the Village’s employees are diligent workers, capable and conscientious. Nevertheless, I would guestimate with reference to inefficient private sector companies that the work force (management, staff and operations) of the Village likely has 15 – 30 %+ “featherbedders”, “driftwood” and “deadwood”. These individuals could be taken off the payroll and there would be minimal to no noticeable effect in the remaining employees’ workload or productivity (i.e., service levels). Excess, unproductive headcount is a drag on any organization. The Village’s operations are no different. Most individuals want to work; no one wants to be taken advantage of but most will acknowledge they are happiest when productively employed. Reducing headcount will benefit the remaining Village employees today through encouraging a healthier work environment; while at the same time ensuring that the resident/taxpayers remain confident in the future of the community. The continual escalating tax burden this Village presents (and it will continue because of the funding requirements of outrageous retiree pension and benefit schemes) coupled with Town, County, State and Federal burdens are increasing the attractiveness of alternative regions and communities. I suggest that the productive workers in this Village increase their consideration of what’s best for them individually and stop their union and local leadership from protecting the “featherbedders”, “driftwood” and “deadwood”. After all it’s only the leadership that benefits from the largest collective bargaining unit.

Come on everyone knows if you don't tip the garbage men a few times a year they will skip your houseRead More now and then. Its not like we have a bunch of top performers out there. There is def fat to be cut.

Sounds like the CSEA is surprised that Village residents are finally paying attention to not onlyRead More the bloated staffing levels in most departments, but the abuse of overtime to do things like weekend leaf clearing and hydrant flushing, and the lack of focus by department heads on increasing efficiency and saving money. BOT: DO NOT BACK DOWN. Force the unions to make concessions and department heads to maintain services WITH fewer people -- just like the private sector -- and DO NOT back down on the layoffs. Hold department heads accountable. Too many have been in place for decades. Time to make changes and bring in people with new ideas.
Nothing will be started until a Coliseum plan has been approved by Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead, and the required Environmental Study has been completed, according to the Garden City board of trustees Public Information Committee.

could they just build this light rail already it will eliminate the need for cars in so manyRead More communities to have a way to transfer by train to other train lines and other communtiies. There should be a light rail built on merrick road, sunrise highway, hempstead turnpike, jericho turnpike, and in suffolk route 110. Overnight the amount of cars being used on long island would disappear.
The senior center on Golf Club Lane.

Save if. Sell the land and make a nice, big senior center at St Paul's. Combine the two centers.Read More Move the rec dept into St Paul's. love the library. The money made in sales and increased taxes on those properties should cover most if the move. This would serve as a great anchor for St Paul's.

If all the seniors put their homes on the market this summer, the housing prices in GC would dropRead More like a stone. As it is, there is going to be a glut of those homes on the market in the next 5-10 years. All you see driving around town is tan Centurys!
LuvGC May 10, 2013 at 02:43 pm
Don't tell me a third of the Village is seniors, that is not relevant. How many seniors actuallyRead More use the center? What other Village space is available to them that is not being used (the library, St. Pauls, schools in the summer). Seems to me too many of these Recreation Dept. projects move along without a lot of thought. Over $700,000 for a roller hockey rink that according to the paper, 350 people use!!! Do that math!!!! It seems to me that our BOT cave to small special interest groups that have pet projects they want to get done.

Small potatoes unit should be for GC residents only.
Steve F April 30, 2013 at 03:17 pm
Siobhan all those you called out are working for free. That should be a relief to you, now pay upRead More for the parking spaces the village of GC already owns and it's residents pay for in taxes. Everywhere else you have to pay to park the GC train stations.
Jack O'Niel April 30, 2013 at 02:57 pm
The real issues are salaries and benefits. Parking permit sales are small change and we willRead More continue down this spiral until the trustees nut up and take contract negotiations seriously.

Libs love to cry and whine about EVERYTHING, don't they? It's unreal. Crying and whining all theRead More way to ruining the greatest country ever on God' green Earth...
Cargo Pants April 26, 2013 at 02:19 pm
I am wondering how your eye on efficiency and reasonable spending can justify spending $4081 for 106Read More Cotton polo shirts for 100 volunteer firefighters? A total of $22,135.28 was approved for new uniforms but almost $7800 of it is for t-shirts, sweatshirts, mesh polo shirts and cargo shorts. How is that reasonable spending??? I can see supplying the required dress uniforms but everyday wear should be paid for out of their own pocket.

Our officials had better nip this in the bud and FAST before GC gets the reputation of being a townRead More on the down swing. Hempstead used to be a nice place to live. Adelphideanlibraries more a burden to Gc than an asset.
Sally Carson April 23, 2013 at 08:08 am
The village needs to act fast before the village gets a reputation as being a place to snap up homesRead More and carve them up into appartments. By the way, this is what the huge tax burden has wrought. You have a 6 BR house with $35K taxes, who exactly do you think is going to buy it but an investor? The days of people being able to pay the monthly nut on these homes let alone the utilities is a bygone era. If they aren't turned into multi-party dwellings, they will start to sit empty. Time to think about what to do about that...even if it's years in the future.
Bill Sweeney April 22, 2013 at 10:02 pm
I trust the Board and GCPD will do the right thing and have Zero tolerance for this type ofRead More nonsense. There is no place for this here and any little hint of easing enforcement will cause a cascade effect that would crush the village. I hope everyone knows that and understands...don't let the current PC crap filled world ruin Garden City, too. Please.

That is not accurate. Background checks were performed and passed, then the guns were illegallyRead More sold. That is what is know as a straw purchase and is already illegal. Get your facts straight and enforce existing laws. NO Gun store is selling any type of firearm without a Federal background check.
Michael G. April 21, 2013 at 10:22 am
"Went to southern states to purchase guns illegally..." Thank Congress for doing nothingRead More to end gun violence. No background checks in the Red States!

If Nassau County would not continue with turn style justice and let these Crips do tall time, thereRead More would be less of them around. As for the Political corruption in Nassau County, they need to start change at the top and work down to the Nassau County Assembly. We all know about the corruption and nepotism that has been a part of our lives here for decades. How about term limits.
