The Garden City board has not appropriated funding to the Recreation Department to staff and supervise ice skating again this winter.
Ice skating on Hubbell's Pond, a village tradition that dates back 100 years, has once again been suspended this winter to cut costs. According to Kevin Ocker, chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Cultural and Recreational Affairs, it costs the village approximately $12,000 a season to set up and monitor the skating program; this includes setting up the warming area, installing sitting areas and ramps down to the ice for safety, monitoring the ice, clearing snow from the ice and staffing the pond area to monitor skaters when and if the ice is safe to skate on. Ocker said the pond does not freeze evenly and even when conditions are perfect an area of only 100 by 200 feet is actually usable. The ice must be 6 inches deep to skate. The …

Anita Kelly of Stewart Manor died Dec. 12 at home. She was 98. Born on Nov. 20, 1913 in midtown New York City, Ms. Kelly is predeceased by her husband, John, and daughters, Diane Lynott and Claire Nash, and grandchildren Daniel James Mohen, Suzanne Mohen, and great grandchildren Connor Michael Kelly, Connor Joseph Mohen, four sisters and a brother. Ms. Kelly is survived by her brother, Edward, her three sons, four daughters, 39 grandchildren and 84 great grandchildren. The wake will be at New Hyde Park Funeral Home at 506 Lakeville Road, New Hyde Park Tuesday from 2-4:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s R.C. Russell Ciolli, owner of Grimaldi's Pizza, died Wednesday. He was 39. Honored as Business Person of the Year in 2009, Mr. Ciolli was very active with the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, serving as a "dedicated director" of the board for the past four years. "Ever willing to open his business to facilitate breakfast chamber meetings, he was instrumental in the development of the Friend of the Chamber Card, which will be part of his legacy, that will continue to help the vitality of our business community," said John Wilton, president of Garden City's Merchant Committee. Garden City resident left his mark on village fire department and so much more.
Garden City lost a lifelong resident and its fire department a "true fireman's fireman" with the passing of John "Jack" Morrison Nov. 9. Mr. Morrison, born at his childhood home on Brompton Road in 1916, died at the age of 95. He was active in the Garden City Fire Department through 1990. He received a full department service before being laid to rest at Holy Rood. According to Chief Charles Cavarra, he began suffering from health issues approximately four years ago. "He laid out his funeral plans then and we followed them to the letter and gave him a bit more," he said. One month after stepping down as chief executive, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has passed away. The New York Times reported: Mr. Jobs stepped down from the chief executive role in late August, saying he could no longer fulfill his duties, and became chairman. He underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer in 2004, and received a liver transplant in 2009. In a statement, Apple said “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. A "true Garden Cityite" and devoted village volunteer.
Garden City said goodbye to a village fixture this week. Long time resident Harold Hecken Jr. died Monday after a long illness. Those who knew him through years of volunteering or just as a friendly neighbor all agree: Mr. Hecken was a true Garden Cityite. Friend and fellow Huntington Road resident Leo Stimmler said whether you met him at a social gathering or out walking his dog, Mr. Hecken always had time for you. "He made you feel that there was no place else he’d rather be than talking to you about football, tennis, his dog, politics or whatever concern you were bringing to him. Village lost a "true icon of Garden City."
Harold Hecken, Jr. was never one to sit back and watch things happen — instead, he made things happen, especially in his beloved Village of Garden City. A committed volunteer, avid sports fan, seasoned tennis player and a regular fixture at various Garden City meetings, Mr. Hecken was passionate about village affairs and was readily willing to lend a hand. He served as a village trustee from April 6, 1992 until April 5, 1999 and later as mayor from April 5, 1999 until April 2, 2001. Mr. Hecken was active in the Eastern Property Owners' Association (EPOA), serving on the board as an officer, director and president and again as a director until his passing Monday. An army in blue showed up in Selden Thursday for the viewing of fallen Nassau County Police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf.
Thousands of police officers in dress blue uniforms lined up outside the Selden Fire Department Thursday evening to pay tribute to fallen Nassau County police officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf. Breitkopf, 40, a decorated veteran of the elite Bureau of Special Operations, was accidentally shot and killed Saturday by an MTA officer while responding to a call in Massapequa Park. He also was a volunteer firefighter in Selden, where he lived with his wife and two children. Among those on hand for Thursday services were Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey.
