Garden City Baseball Knocked Out of Playoffs

Red-hot South Side eliminates Trojans in Nassau A quaterfinals.

Garden City High School's varsity baseball team saw their season and their playoff run come to an end Thursday, when they suffered their second straight loss to Rockville Centre's red-hot South Side High School in the Nassau A quarterfinals. Garden City's Trojans had moved into the second round after a thrilling walk-off victory over Lynbrook, but they couldn't beat third-seeded South Side High School, which came into the quarterfinals on a streak of 11 straight victories including a first-round playoff win over Bethpage. On Wednesday, it was the Trojans cruising to an early 10-2 lead only to see it disappear when South Side delivered a 12-run inning to jump out in front and take a 1-0 series lead over GC.  It wasn’t the type of …

Garden City Baseball Earns Walk-Off Playoff Victory

Richie Smith's Garden City squad wins a tight 3-1 game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning over Lynbrook.

Garden City bounced back from a tough 1-0 defeat to Wantagh on Saturday with a rousing walk-off victory over Lynbrook.  The Trojans battled all game long but were stymied by Lynbrook pitcher Ian Reid until Andrew LoBasso launched a one-out rocket over the head of the Owls left fielder for a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.  With their loss on Saturday, GC was facing elimination in their second playoff game.  But with the win, they now enter the best of three quarterfinal round that begins on Wednesday. Pitching a stellar four-hitter for the Garden City Trojans was Kyle Ritchie.  He was able to keep the Lynbrook batters off balance with a good fastball, a hard breaking curve and excellent location. Ritchie finished the game …

Photos of the 122nd Woodstick Classic held at Garden City High School.

The 122nd Woodstick Classic wasn't just about the nation's longest continuous high school sports rivalry. It was a celebration of both the communities of Garden City and Manhasset, their love of lacrosse and giving back. The festivities kicked off Saturday with a youth boys lacrosse clinic, as some of the youngest players from both towns took to the field with local lacrosse legends including Major League Lacrosse star Tim "Monster" Goettelmann. Then, Garden City's JV boys team bested Manhasset, 10-9, in an exciting game that extended into overtime.  At noon, Goettelmann suited up along with his fellow All-American athletes from Manhasset and those from Garden City for the second annual Woodstick Classic Alumni game. Goettelmann, who lives…

Trogans edge Warriors 14-10 in potential Nassau County Class B finals preview.

The two longtime rivals are no strangers to big games, with Garden City defeating Wantagh in the 2009 and 2010 county finals.  "It is always a great game with Wantagh," said longtime Garden City girls lacrosse head coach Diane Chapman, whose team held a 9-4 halftime lead before the Warriors mounted a second half comeback and cut the lead the three twice. Head Coach Gordon Purdie scores 50th career victory in match against Bentley University.

The third seeded men's lacrosse team took on the sixth seeded Falcons of Bentley University (5-9) Tuesday afternoon on Motamed Field in the first round of the Northeast-10 Tournament. Despite the Falcons striking first in the low scoring affair, three straight periods with two goals in each propelled the Panthers to a 6-4 victory. It was not until Bentley's Brendan Grant finally broke the silence at 9:11 with the first goal of the game on an unassisted play.   The Falcons held the 1-0 advantage for nearly 15 minutes until Joe Vitale leveled the playing …

A recap of Saturday's lacrosse match-ups for Adelphi University.

Adelphi's Men Lax Defeat St. Anselm The #5 men's lacrosse team played host to the unranked Hawks of St. Anselm College Saturday afternoon on Motamed Field in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Despite a slow start, the Panther offense picked up throughout the game while solid defensive efforts and an outstanding job by goalie Eric Jannsen kept the visitors at bay. When all was said and done, Adelphi came out on top 12-2 to advance to 11-2, 7-2 NE-10 while their counterparts drop to 8-4, 5-3 NE-10.   The matchup was a slow going affair in the first with just Joe Celano (3G) and Doug Quednau (1G) successfully finding the back of the cage out of 17 total team shots.   The Panthers final got going just a few ticks past the seven minute mark in…
