Adelphi Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener to Dowling, 72-65

Box Score

Garden City, N.Y. – The men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season to Dowling College earlier this evening in a non-conference contest.  Despite three players in double figures, the Golden Lions surged in the second to overcome an 18 point deficit and serve the Panthers the 72-65 loss. In defeat, the Brown and Gold slip to 0-1 while Dowling moves to 3-0.

Junior Duane Morgan led the way with a team high 15 points for Adelphi to compliment his eight rebounds while newcomer Jeremy Schulkin chipped in with 14 points on 5-9 shooting from the field and a 4-6 performance from behind the arc. Boris Fodouop pulled down six boards to go along with his 10 points while sophomore point guard Anthony Libroia added nine points in the loss. Ryan DiNicola pulled down a career and game high 15 rebounds.

The Panthers kept the game close through the opening eight minutes but found themselves down by six after a Damon Coleman turnover made way for a Justin Alexander layup at the 10:24 mark. However, an 8-0 run bookmarked by a DeNicola lay in and free throw gave Adelphi a two point advantage, 22-20. The lead was short lived as Dowling managed to string together an 18-8 run, turning the tables and forcing the Brown and Gold into an eight-point hole. A triple by Greg Davis and back-to-back layups by Libroia and Coleman to end the half closed the gap to one as both teams headed into the locker room with the score in favor of the visitors, 36-35.

In the opening 8:12 of the second frame, the Panthers ripped off an impressive 24-5 run to give them an 18 point cushion. During the streak, they shot 10-15 from the field as a team and connected on their first six attempts which gave them a seemingly insurmountable buffer.

However, Adelphi went cold from the field following the hot streak and missed their next eight field goal attempts and turned the ball over six times which left the door wide open for their counterparts. Dowling capitalized on the opportunity and fired back with a 21-1 run of their own to give them the first lead since halftime.

Leon Taylor sunk his two free throws with 3:06 left in the game to put them up by five which proved to be enough of a lead to hold on to down the stretch. Six more consecutive foul shots put the icing on the cake as the Panthers were unable to overcome the last minute deficit, ultimately falling by seven points.
