Petra’s Promise: Oktoberfest Fundraiser

Purchase your tickets now for this October 5th fundraiser for neighbor and friend Petra Dehler.

Garden City mom Petra Dehler suffered a debilitating stroke last spring. While she is working hard on her recovery, friends and family have rallied together to raise funds to help defray the costs of her long-term care.

In the true spirit of friends helping friends, a fundraiser will be held on Petra’s behalf Saturday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at 58 Third Street in Garden City.

All are invited to attend this special event. Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased at www.petraspromise.com. Reserve your spot today! Mingle with neighbors and friends and at the same time help support this worthy cause. As a tribute to Petra’s German heritage, entertainment will include German dancers along with a live band.

Though she has made consistent progress, Petra will require extensive medical care. All funds raised will help with Petra’s care. Petra is the proud mother of two sons. The entire Dehler family, Petra, her husband John and sons, Johnny and Timmy are vibrant members of the Garden City community. A typical family, they were in the throes of raising their sons when the unthinkable occurred.

John, a Garden City native and former director of Racquet Sports at Port Washington Yacht Club and tennis instructor for Garden City’s recreation department, has been by her side along with her two sons supporting her progress.

For Petra, family comes first. She was always heading out to one of her son’s baseball or soccer games - and as soon as she received clearance she started to attend games again. An eternal optimist, she’s known for encouraging everyone on the team.

As a tribute to Petra’s generous spirit, friends hope that Petra’s Promise will also raise awareness regarding the incidence, warning signs and symptoms of a stroke. Women are more likely to die from a stroke than men because their symptoms can be less common and are more easily missed.

This fundraiser is spearheaded by friends Colleen Tariche, Katie Colavito and Terry Goulard and a host of neighbors. Currently the committee is seeking sponsorships, raffle and live auction donations as well as monetary contributions. Sponsorships are available at different price points. Families or corporate sponsors are encouraged to team up to purchase sponsorships. Your help is needed to make this evening a success. Local businesses are also welcome to help with contributions. All donations will be acknowledged at the event and in a printed program.

“With our hearts we have created Petra’s Promise,” said good friend Terry Goulard. “We all have families and understand the difficulties an illness can reap. Petra’s love of life and uplifting personality are truly the pulse of Petra’s Promise. We hope the community comes out for this fundraiser.”

Her husband, John, has been inspired by his wife’s bravery and calls her his “inspiration.” Despite the challenges ahead, he has said that with Petra by his side they can do anything. So friends, let’s make magic for Petra. In the spirit of friendship, love, family and hope - we look forward to seeing you there!

If interested in donating contact either Katie Colavito at kcolavito@yahoo.com or Grace Trimmer at tgtrim@optonline.net. Monetary donations are also being accepted and checks should be made out to Petra’s Promise and forwarded to: Petra’s Promise, P.O. Box 33, Garden City, NY  11530.
