#82: The Pear Tree Shoppe

Garden City has a special gift shop on Seventh Street.

The Pear Tree Shoppe (more commonly referred to as just The Pear Tree) has been an institution in Garden City for 38 years.

With that kind of market savvy weathering bad - and good - economic times, it’s no wonder the Pear Tree is still going strong.

Now that it's warm out, drop the kids off at Baskin Robbins for a cone and head next door to the Pear Tree. Lovely gifts and goodies can be found there, thanks to owners Dale Brokaw, Jan McDonough and Lois Tighe.

Need a hostess gift for the next party you go to? They’ve got it. How about a beautiful Christening outfit for your baby? They have that too. Need wedding invitations? Only the best are at the Pear Tree.

Tighe said, “We deal exclusively with William Arthur’s invitations and announcements, and we have Rita Renning, its offshoot.” Arthur features sophisticated traditional and modern styles.

The Pear Tree is filled with popular gifts, home décor and accessories, which include:

  1.  A full line of Vera Bradley products
  2. Baby gifts and clothing
  3. “The Thymes Limited”- a fine line of personal home fragrances
  4. Fun jewelry for parties or work
  5. Herend figurines hand-painted in Hungary
  6. Personalized gifts for all occasions

When it opened in 1973 the Pear Tree was located on Nassau Boulevard in Garden City South, according to Kris Harder, one of the original owners who partnered with Karen Hasemann, Beverly Murphy and Diane Vollmer.

“The Pear Tree name- We went through so many names. We finally decided on a Christmasy theme of ‘The Partridge in the Pear Tree,’ so we shortened it to the Pear Tree,” explained Harder.

It is one of the first women-owned businesses in Garden City, second perhaps only to Admiral Travel, which started in 1966 with Marge Conway.

Another location later on was on Franklin Avenue where Hengstenberg Florists is right now. The Pear Tree has been in its current location on Seventh Street for 23 years, according to Irene Travias, the dressmaker who shares space in the store. She specializes in alterations for wedding gowns as well as everyday clothing.

The Pear Tree is a store for the perfect sophisticated gift with complimentary gift wrap. It is conveniently located at 169 Seventh Street, next to Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts. Call 248-1313 or email ThePearTreeShoppe@gmail.com for more information.
